It is one of most cherished days of my life – just because of this blog.I have attempted something really new and really satisfied with the result. I also hope you can enjoy it and appreciate the hard work which have gone behind this.
I have attempted to create a Sangam poem as a comic strip. This was an accidental process. I asked Bala(artist whom I am working with to illustrate sangam poems) to draw some illustartions for a poem. I actuallyw anted to make a story board kind of effect with it.
Bala gave his beautiful paintings and I was trying some softwares and couldn’t get desired results with story board. SO decided to try hand at comic style and the end product you are seeing now is a comic. I have modified the original paintings of Bala to fit it into the comic format.
I just wanted to make one page comic …but some serious Frank Miller influence I added 3 more pages to fit in as stand alone comic. If the response is good I would continue with this experiment.

Thalaivan is away from Thalaivi and Thalaivi is suffering without Thalaivan. Seeing her suffering her friend utters this poem.
Thalaivan while he walks through the Palai region with black colored soil and filled with Kalli plant,
கள்ளி¹ kaḷḷlli
, n. < id. [K. M. kaḷḷi.] 1. Spurge, s. tr., Euphorbia; செடிவகை. கள்ளியங் கடத்திடை (ஐங்குறு. 323). 2. Milk-hedge. See திருகுகள்ளி. (I.P.) 3. Five-tubercled spurge. See இலைக்கள்ளி. 4. Square spurge. See சதுரக் கள்ளி. 5. Cement plant. See மண்டங்கள்ளி. (L.) 6. Common prickly pear. See சப்பாத்துக் கள்ளி. (L.)
Thalaivan would see the parrot holding fruit of Vembu in its curved beak, this would look like a gold coin in between the sharp nails of a gold smith who is stringing a new jewel(the comic would give exactly what the poet means in visual format).
For readers to understand better we have to see how does Fruit of vembu tree looks like…

To really appreciate these paintings you should also know how bad some people are at sketching. This was the rough sketch I sent to Bala so that he can get an idea how the illustrations should be ….

I am not much aware of Sangam literature however attempts like yours will surely help understanding this literature in a very easy and cheerful manner. I hope that you continue this effort and we get all the poems in this form of your comic strips.

Dear Vairam: Excellent ! Just for your reference, the Malar that was brought out for the second World Tamil conference (late 1960s) had plates of imagery of Purananooru poems. As I recall (don’t havey a copy here) that it was a composite of several imageries in a single frame without demarcation. There were no words in it. Your concept of storey-telling combined with imagery is truly innovative, particularly the selection of Kuruthogai. Keep up the good service.

Mikke Nandri – I guess you can print a book with all these beautifull collections. You know you are doing a great job and this is a fantastic idea to illustrate our Sangam Tamil in the form of comic, this helps present generation Tamilians to understand the greatness of their language and also pass it on to their kids.

I may be permitted to post here my English translation of Kurunthokai verse No.399
ஊர் உண் கேணி உண் துறைத் தொக்க
பாசி அற்றே பசலை — காதலர்
தொடுவுழித் தொடுவுழி நீங்கித
விடுவுழி விடுவுழி பரத்தலானே. (Tamil)
The quatrain speaks about the languish of the woman’s heart and body when separated from her man. Pallor is the loss of colour of the skin owing to emotional distress. The comparison is perfect.
English translation:
Pallor’s like the moss on water in public tank
’cause the oftener the drinker dips his hands
it drifts apart, but the sooner closes back,
as at my lover’s touch each time.
